Day 8: Italy's Incomparable Venice
Daily Briefing
After yesterday's fast paced day it seemed good to have a travel day from Reutte to Venice. Reid warned us that the pace of the tour was just beginning to pick up and each day in Venice, Florence and Rome would be packed with high activity adventures.
We left Reutte in a light drizzle and during the drive Reid provided great historical background for Venice. Our first stop was the Tirolean town of Neumarkt (Egna) where we had lunch and a gelato. From there, it was on to Venice. Reid gave us a navigation lesson by explaining that Venice is a maze of streets and canals and the best way to find your way to the hotel is to find the Rialto Bridge or St. Mark's Square and then know how to navigate to the hotel from either of these two points. Directions to the Rialto and St. Mark's are displayed on the corners of most buildings so they are easy to find. We were given a walking tour of St. Mark's, then on to a group dinner at Alla Scala. Due to a combination of high winds and tide, we experienced Acqua Alta, or partial shallow flooding of some Venice neighborhoods. St. Mark's was flooded and our optional gondola ride was postponed. We stayed around St. Marks Square and were treated to a spritz which is a local drink. |
