Day 12: A Walk Through Caesar's Rome
Daily Briefing
We knew this would be another big day. We arrived in Rome in early afternoon and had to carry our luggage several blocks to the Hotel Nardizzi Americana. The hotel's location was on the 5th floor of a building, another hotel was on the 4th floor. The elevator was so small we simply sent our luggage up on it and climbed the 5 floors.
Reid gave us a lesson on riding the subway. Roman subways are crowded and you can't be shy or polite about getting on. You have to be assertive or you'll be left on the platform or worse yet, miss your stop. We stopped briefly at St. Peter in Chains Church where we saw St. Peter's chains and a Michelangelo sculpture titled Moses. We made our way to the Colosseum where we met our guide Francesca, who was outstanding. From the Colosseum we walked to the forum area. It's moving to know that you are walking through an area that was developed and thriving over 2,000 years ago. We ended the day with a walk through the heart of Rome viewing the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps. This was indeed a walking day with 20,000 steps, 8.2 miles and 51 flights of stairs. And we all knew that tomorrow would be just as strenuous. Tomorrow the Vatican! |
