Day 18: A Hearty Taste of Burgundy
Daily Briefing
Today felt like more of a day off than Cinque Terre. We bused from Switzerland to Beaune, France. Upon arrival we were given a walking tour of Beaune, a tour of the wine museum and spent time in the Hotel Dieu, a 15th century hospice which is now a museum featuring an early pharmacy, a beautiful altar piece, lots of tapestries, carvings and other artifacts. The structure itself features patterned tile roofs, and many gargoyles and other decorations. Reid described the state of healthcare in this period where a person with cholera might share a bed with someone with a broken leg. As a result this was often more a place of death than of healing which explains the presence of an altar in the sickroom itself.
In the evening we attended a wine tasting at the Bouchard Aine & Fils winery followed by a hearty Burgundian dinner which included escargot. After sunset we walked through the city. An easy day but filled with interesting sites and adventures. We only walked 7800 steps and 3.30 miles, the lightest day of the tour. From Pam's Sketchbook

A Few Words About: Activity Levels
Activity levels varied widely by day. Almost all bus days were low activity levels. High activity level days frequently contained optional hikes or free time walks which pushed those levels up considerably. Pam wore her Fitbit Pedometer during the entire tour and we downloaded our daily activity to the Fitbit website when we got home. Attached are the statistics in terms of steps, miles and floors by day. Note: Fitbit includes both hills and stairs in it's calculation of "floors".
We found that we could be more tired on a lower activity day than a high activity day due to the time spent standing in museums. You can always opt out of any activity if you don't feel up to it.
