Day Day 6: Dachau and Austria's Tirol
Daily Briefing
Today we left Rothenburg and traveled out of central Germany and into Bavaria. Our first stop was the infamous Nazi concentration camp, Dachau, which is located just outside of Munich. Dachau served as a work camp for political prisoners and housed over 200,000 prisoners from 1933 through 1945. More than 43,000 died while in the camp. We toured the camp with a local guide named Keith who requested that we did not "film him" due to strict German privacy laws, therefore I was hesitant to take many pictures. I did however take a few shots of the camp and the International Memorial. The visit to the camp was sobering but necessary to understand what happened. We stopped at the restaurant on the premises for a quick lunch and then back to the bus for our trip to Reutte.
Our next stop was the Wieskirche. This church is situated in a very rural setting. In 1738, a statue of the Scourged Savior appeared to be crying tears. Pilgrims from all over Christendom flocked to the area to see the statue. This very ornate Rococo style church was constructed between 1745 and 1754 and is an unexpected gem we never would have seen on our own. It's great to have a guide when you want to make the most of your experience. |
